A simple gift of money felt too impersonal to me. So I wanted to create something for two very close friends that would exist only for them: a hand painted original.
Most of my paintings are created intuitively. I rarely follow an exact preliminary drawing or a fully developed plan. Often there is only a first rough direction that changes while I paint and eventually takes on a path of its own.
That is why I find the small sketch that started this work especially amusing today. Hardly anything of the original idea can still be recognized in the finished painting, and yet it was the first impulse for everything that followed.
“Where Love Takes Root” was created within just a few days. The varnish was still so fresh when I handed the painting over that it had not even dried completely. During the entire journey I had to hold it carefully and make sure the surface remained untouched. That is also why only a few photographs of its creation exist today.
The painting was created with love for two people to whom I wish a love that continues to grow throughout a lifetime, finds strength and takes deep root.
