2020: A strong desire began to grow within me: I finally wanted to make painting a permanent part of my life.
Ever since childhood, I had loved painting with watercolors and drawing with all kinds of pens and pencils. Even though I initially followed the classic, secure path of employment, painting never really left me. I scribbled in notebooks and on pads, on coffee cups and on whatever happened to be in front of me.
But in 2020, I wanted to know. I no longer wanted painting to remain something I did on the side. I wanted to truly make space for it in my life. I still had no idea what I wanted to paint, but I knew that I wanted to paint.
So I finally began taking the acrylic paints I had once been given seriously. Shortly afterwards, I bought a canvas and an easel that happened to be on sale at the supermarket. At first, I overthought everything. Then I simply stood in front of the white canvas and thought: No idea. What now?
Between doing laundry, everyday life with my sister and her TV series playing in the background, I disappeared into my own little world. At some point, I stopped trying to control everything. I wanted to experiment and let my instinct take the lead.
And that instinct told me: the canvas should stand vertically. Then came the idea of including my sketchbook as well. I simply placed everything I had and wanted to use on the table.
Because it was night, I thought of stars, vastness and the infinity of the universe. My love for strong contrasts found its expression particularly in this painting. Still, it felt incomplete to me. So I thought of majestic mountains, which for me come closest to the universe.
And just like the mountains, my family and friends are my greatest support in every project I take on. Since my mother loves both the mountains and the universe and is deeply connected to nature herself, I gave this painting to her.
It has been in her possession ever since.
